The Aaron Copland Fund for Music

Deadline Date:

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants to USA, Canada, and International nonprofit organizations for programs and projects related to contemporary American music. Funding may be requested for special projects or general operating support. Preference will be given to projects that relate to a broad spectrum of American music, rather than a single work or composer.

Applications may be submitted by nonprofit organizations that have a history of substantial commitment to contemporary American music but whose needs are not addressed by the Fund's programs of support for performing and presenting organizations and recording projects, such as music service organizations, education/residency organizations, library/archive organizations, and radio/TV organizations.

Professional performance organizations or presenters may apply for special training activities outside of their normal performance activities.

The following criteria will be applied in evaluating grant proposals:
-Will granting the request tend to encourage and improve the public knowledge and appreciation of serious American contemporary music?
-What contributions has the organization made in the past and what contributions is it likely to make in the future?
-Is the organization responsibly and effectively managed?
-For organizations that are otherwise involved with performances: are the ensembles and repertoire being presented of outstanding artistic quality?

The Copland Fund’s definition of “contemporary”:

Works of living and recently deceased composers are eligible, as well as other works written within the last century that are of importance. In general, the fund tends to support music written in the last 50 years. For projects of music written before that of particular importance to the field, please contact the grants manager.

However in the Recording Program, the Fund is interested primarily in supporting recordings of works by living American composers and those who are recently deceased. Regarding works by deceased composers, the Fund will give preference to works of composers who died in 1980 or later, but will consider funding extraordinary projects involving the music of American composers who died earlier.

The Copland Fund’s definition of “American”:
Composers with U.S. citizenship, as well as composers that have lived and worked in the U.S. for a significant period of time, are eligible. The Fund does not set rigid parameters but considers any questionable situations on a case-by-case basis. For the Fund’s purposes, “American” refers to the United States, its territories, and possessions.

Term of Contract:

Please note that project support will be given only for a project that begins in the current season. Thus, for the 2020 grant round, support will be given only to projects that begin between September 2019 and August 2020. Multi-year projects will be considered if they begin in the current season, but projects that have already begun generally will not be eligible for support.

Applicants should be aware that support in one year does not imply continuation of that support.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

All applicant organizations must have been in existence for at least two years at the time of application. Organizations that are otherwise involved with performances, must have presented two full seasons prior to the season for which support is requested.

Organizations without nonprofit status may seek support with the sponsorship of a nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) status. You must submit a letter from the sponsoring organization describing the nature of the arrangement, and undertaking to be responsible for disbursement of funds if a grant is awarded. In addition, you must include the sponsor's IRS tax-exempt determination letter.

Organizations located outside the U.S. may apply. International organizations must submit a letter from a lawyer confirming your organization’s equivalence to a publicly funded 501(c)(3) organization. All financial figures in the proposal should be converted to U.S. dollars.

Projects that are part of the curriculum of an educational institution are not eligible for support.

Presenters and Festivals seeking support for their normal performance activity should apply to the Performance Program.

IMPORTANT: You are responsible for complying with all legal and contractual requirements that may apply to the creation of your materials. The Copland Fund hereby disclaims all legal responsibility in connection with your submissions. In case of questions, consult your legal advisor.
