Grants of up to $5,000 to Washington nonprofit organizations, government agencies, tribes, and IHEs to promote volunteerism. Funding may be used to support projects and to strengthen organizational capacity. Eligible projects should address needs in the community and engage volunteers in service. Capacity building projects should provide an identified solution to a need within the organizations volunteer programming.

Serve Washington seeks to award grants to support capacity building initiatives and volunteer service projects. Specifically, Serve Washington seeks to award projects that expand the capacity of volunteer organizations to recruit, manage, support and retain volunteers, and expand volunteer connector organizations' infrastructure to increase volunteerism statewide.

Examples of appropriate grant proposal requests could include, but are not limited to:

  • Capacity building for volunteer connecting organizations
    • Design and launch a volunteer recruitment campaign in the local community that results in measurable volunteer registrations
    • Volunteer Management or spontaneous volunteer management training delivery that result in increased capacity for organizational support of volunteers
  • Volunteer days of service
    • Plan and host a service project (at least 3 hours) that utilizes volunteers to meet a community need
    • Host a volunteer service day in conjunction with National Volunteer Week or September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance
  • CERT program support
    • Plan and host a Volunteer Reception Center simulation in their local community to train and prepare staff, volunteers, and partners for coordinating large groups of volunteers in a disaster.
    • Design and launch a disaster volunteer recruitment campaign in their local community that results in measurable disaster volunteer registrations and disaster volunteer data tracking.

Term of Contract:

The grant period will begin April 1, 2020 and end September 29, 2020.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The following non-federal entities that have DUNS numbers and are registered in System for Award Management (SAM) are eligible to apply:
- State, municipal, and county governments, including departments and agencies therein
- Tribes
- Nonprofit organizations
- Institutions of higher education

Organizations applying for this grant must have the capacity to support volunteer connector functions and implement effective volunteer engagement practices. Volunteer connector organizations provide the following services:
- Promote volunteering
- Connect people with opportunities to volunteer and serve
- Develop internally and/or support partners in deploying local programming designed to utilize volunteerism as a solution to community problems,
- Increase capacity for organizations to engage volunteers in meaningful service,
