Awards to USA journalists to recognize outstanding reporting on health care. Entries will be judged on the quality of reporting, the relevance and impact on health care policy, and new insights offered. Awards will recognize individual articles or series related to the financing and delivery of health care or health care policy.

One award will be made in each of the following two categories:

  • General Circulation Print Journalism Award
  • Trade Journalism Award

Eligible for awards:

  • Articles must originally have been published during the calendar year 2019.
  • Articles should be timely and produce new insights into health care financing and delivery or health care policy.

Selection Criteria

  • New insights generated by the reporting
  • Impact on health care policy
  • Quality of reporting
  • Relevance to one or both of the subject areas (financing and delivery of health care and/or the impact of health care policy)

Estimated Size of Grant:

The Print Journalism Award carries a $20,000 prize and the Trade Publication Award carries a $15,000 prize.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

- An individual may be listed as the primary contributor on no more than three (3) entries but may be listed as a co-contributor on additional entries
- An entry can be either a series or an individual piece of work

General Circulation Print: Entries will be accepted from newspapers and magazines and their websites. Entries will also be accepted from independent news sites.

Trade: Entries will be accepted from publications written for a specialty audience.

Pre-Application Information:

Deadline: February 3, 2020

The judges select finalists by mid March, and all entrants will be notified of the finalist decision shortly thereafter. The winners will be selected in April and announced publicly at our awards dinner on May 13, 2020.

Print Journalism Award entrants are not required to mail materials. If you decide to include physical supporting documents, all mailed materials must be postmarked by February 3, 2020. Mail your materials at the same time you submit online to avoid processing delays.
