Grants to USA nonprofits for projects that benefit individuals, families, and communities in eligible states. In order to apply for funding, applicants must first submit a letter of intent. Funding is intended for life-long learning and programs to meet basic needs such as housing, nutrition, and employment.

Eligible states include Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Priorities:

Grant investments made through the Dreams Foundation will align with the American Family Insurance organizational mission to inspire, protect and restore dreams. The Foundation will make grant based investments in programs and services designed to advance and support life-long learning, as well as the removal of barriers to meeting select basic needs. Within its areas of priority, the Foundation will maintain an overall emphasis on programs and services that support underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals and families.

Lifelong Learning:
Programs and services that provide access to education and empower individuals to take part in a diverse, sustainable, and growing workforce.
Specific areas of grant making focus include:
- Wrap-around educational programming to Pre-K through college curriculum, including STEAM and early childhood development
- Employment Access and Opportunity through job training, financial literacy, and workforce readiness

Basic Needs:
Programs and services that remove barriers to short and/or long-term needs of individuals and families in order to provide a brighter future for all.
Specific areas of grant making focus include:
- Food Security through food banks and pantries, community gardens, and sustainable food sources
- Housing via emergency shelter, and long term stable housing
- Transportation and Daycare to pursue education and/or maintain employment

The average grant award is approximately $10,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organizations must meet the following criteria:
- Currently registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization as designated by the IRS in good standing.
- Office located in one of the Foundation's 19 operating states: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, or Wisconsin

The Dreams Foundation does not support:
- Individuals
- Fundraising events, sponsorships
- Memorial grants
- Places of worship
- Scouting groups
- Requests to support travel
- General operational support
- Capital campaigns or projects
- Lobbying, political or fraternal activities
- Medical research
- 501c3 organizations outside of the Foundation's 19 operating states

Grants may not be made to organizations that discriminate based on race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, or disability status.

Pre-Application Information:

American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation hosts two funding cycles a year and utilizes a two-step process which includes a Letter of Intent (LOI) and Request for Proposal. Organizations may submit an online Letter of Intent (LOI) to initiate the grant process. If the LOI is approved for full proposal submission, the organization will be notified and sent a link to submit the full proposal for consideration. All organizations will be notified of their LOI status. Full grant submissions will be reviewed internally and then grants will be awarded.

Timelines for last 2018 grant cycle:

- Grant portal opens: July 2, 2018
- Letter of Intent (LOI) submissions: due July 31, 2018 at 5:00 PM (Central)
- Notifications to nonprofit organizations about the status of their LOI: Early September
- Full grant proposal due (by invite only): October 1, 2018
- Grant award notification and disbursement: November
