Grants of up to $10,000 to Washington nonprofit organizations in eligible areas for projects benefiting a broad spectrum of community needs. Priority will be given to projects focused on COVID-19/coronavirus preparedness and responsiveness. Eligible organizations must benefit residents in Bainbridge Island.

BCF is requesting that each grant applicant examine the clear needs of its organization (be it an operational or service delivery need) and hone the application request for grant funding accordingly. Applicants should focus on what is most important for the organization and for the benefits it provides to the community.  BCF will be reviewing with a need vs. want lens.

Below are the non-COVID-19-related grant guidelines:

The Foundation's giving strategy focuses on long-term impact, permanence, and sustainability. As a community foundation, focus areas are general and help sustain all sectors of the nonprofit community. Grants are made for:

  • Animal Welfare
  • Arts, Culture, Humanities (including Recreation)
  • Disaster Relief
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Health and Human Services (including Housing)
  • Public/Society Benefit
  • Science/Technology
  • Social Science/Public Policy

Community Grants Funding Types:

  • Program (Specific program or project)
  • Capital (Equipment/facility repairs, etc.); Estimates must be provided at time of application
  • Direct (Access to programming/support or access for underserved populations)
  • Operating (General operating support)

Estimated Size of Grant:

Applicants must request funding between $1,000–$10,000.

Term of Contract:

Projects must run from July of the application year to June of next year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible Applicants must:
- Have current 501(c)(3) nonprofit status from the IRS
- Serve Bainbridge Island residents, located in Washington State

Ineligible:
Grants will not be awarded to any religious organization where the funds would be used in whole or in part to further the organization’s religious purposes, but solely for secular purposes; to individuals; for any political purposes; for vehicles; or for any endowment funds. Funds will not be awarded for equipment and/or programs, etc. that were started, completed, or acquired prior to the grant period. BCF does not fund research, scholarship/fellowship, in-kind or product donation, or loans.

Applications to the 2020 Community Grants Cycle will be accepted from February 25, 2020 to April 7, 2020.

- February 25: At 12:00 pm (noon) Pacific, grant applications “go live”
- April 7: Online submission deadline is 5:00 pm Pacific; applications will not be accepted past 5:00 pm
- April 8 – June 14: Application evaluation and review
- April 6 – April 24: Application Reviews scheduled with applicants via phone or computer technology (No in-person site visits in 2020).
- June 16: BCF Board of Trustees makes final grant-making decisions
- June 17: Organizations notified of funding decisions
