Grants of $15,000 to USA public K-12 school districts in eligible regions to support new and existing STEM programs. Applicants must be nominated by local farmers to participate. Funding is intended for programs that increase interest or improve learning and instruction in science, technology, engineering and math. The purpose of the program is to help improve education in rural America, thereby keeping rural schools growing.

The program funds many different types of projects focused on science, technology, engineering and/or math every year. School districts are encouraged to write grant applications that will fund projects that meet the individual needs of the district and their goals for its students. The range of projects funded each year is broad and examples include, but are not limited to, starting or renovating greenhouses or school gardens, creating makerspaces, purchasing technology for math or science classrooms, and updating science lab equipment.

The Fund encourage programs that make connections between the disciplines and/or are multidisciplinary within science, technology, engineering and math. Decisions will be based on a combination of financial need in the district, the merit of the proposed program, and community support demonstrated by farmer nominations.

Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri will each receive 9 grants; Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin will each receive 6 grants; California, Kentucky, Michigan, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee will each receive 4 grants; Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, New York, and North Carolina, will each receive 2 grants; Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, and Washington, will each receive 1 grant; One grant will be awarded to one of the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont; One grant will be awarded to one of the following states: Florida, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, West Virginia, Wyoming.

Grants are awarded in early August of each year and the program funds should be expended by the following October.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Program is open to nominations from Eligible Farmer’s for Public School Districts.

Eligible Farmer –An Eligible Farmer must: 1) be 21 years of age or older at time of nomination, and 2) be actively engaged in farming a minimum of 250 acres. A farmer is “actively engaged in farming” if he or she performs the work on the farm, or hires and actively manages others who do so.

Eligible School Districts – In order to be eligible to receive a grant under the Program a school district must be considered a public school district by the National Center For Education Statistics (NCES). Public charter schools are eligible if they are considered public by NCES.

Individuals Not Eligible to Participate – The following individuals are not eligible to participate in the Program: (1) officers, directors, and employees of Bayer Fund (the “Sponsor”), or of any of its representatives or advertising/promotion agencies, or any of their spouses/domestic partners, children, or household members; (2) officers, directors and employees, of Bayer, or of any of its subsidiaries or affiliates, or any of their spouses/domestic partners, children, or household members; and (3) officers, directors and employees of any seed dealer, or any of their spouses/domestic partners, children, or household members.

Once you register, you will have the dial-in number and the Conference ID Number. You will need both for the call. This information will also be sent to you via email the week of the call, assuming you register in advance.

Please note that you may want to join the call approximately 15 minutes prior to the start time to be connected. Hundreds of callers may participate in each call, and it takes time to gather information from each caller.

Pre-Application Information:

Nominations from Eligible Farmers must be received between 10:00 a.m. Central Time on January 1, 2020 and 5:00 p.m. Central Time on April 1, 2020

Entries from Eligible School Districts must be received between 10:00 a.m. Central Time on January 1, 2020 and 9:00 p.m. Central Time on May 1, 2020.

Eligible farmers my nominate online, by mail, or by phone. Limit one school district nomination per Eligible Farmer, regardless of method of entry.

From May – June, grants submissions are reviewed by a panel of math and science teachers and finalists are announced by the end of June. An Advisory Council, composed of both teachers and farmer-leaders with an interest in agriculture and education reviews each of the finalist applications and selects the winning school districts. Winners are announced in early August.

Application questions will be answered within two business days. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the application and ask program-related questions well in advance of the deadline.

No school district may win more than one grant per year under the Program and no Eligible Farmer may enter in more than one Eligible County.
