Fellowships to USA, Canada, and International scholars for research related to modern Jewish history. Fellowships are intended for deserving scholars who are currently engaged in post-doctoral, graduate-level, or independent study. Fellowships will take place either in New York or in Jerusalem, Israel. Research topics in the fields of 20th-century Jewish history, general history, and humanitarian assistance are considered, as well as other areas of academic research covered in the JDC archival collections. Stipends may be used toward travel, transportation, and living expenses.

Applications will be considered for the following fellowship awards: 

  • The Fred and Ellen Lewis Fellowship: One (1) or two (2) fellowships will be awarded each year to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives facility in New York or Jerusalem.
  • The Ruth and David Musher Fellowship: One (1) fellowship will be awarded each year to a deserving scholar engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives facility in New York or Jerusalem.
  • The Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin Fellowship: One (1) fellowship will be awarded each year to a deserving scholar engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives. 
  • The Max and Cecil (Steuer) Chesin Fellowship: One (1) fellowship will be awarded each year to a deserving scholar from outside the United States engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives. 
  • The Nathan & Sarah Chesin and Bernard & Mollie Steuer Fellowships: One (1) fellowship will be awarded each year to a deserving scholar engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives.
  • The Ruth and David Musher JDC Archives Regional Fellowship: Four fellowships will be granted in total over several years to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives on the following topics: JDC’s work in Israel and the Yishuv; and JDC’s work in the Jewish communities of North Africa.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- The Fred and Ellen Lewis Fellowship: The amount granted will range from $2,000 to $5,000 per fellow.
- The Ruth and David Musher Fellowship: The amount granted will be $2,500 per fellow per year. 
- The Sorrell and Lorraine Chesin Fellowship: The amount granted will be $2,500.
- The Max and Cecil (Steuer) Chesin Fellowship: The amount granted will be $2,500.
- The Nathan & Sarah Chesin and Bernard & Mollie Steuer Fellowships: The amount granted will be $2,500.
- The Ruth and David Musher JDC Archives Regional Fellowship: The amount granted will be $2,500.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Fellowships will be awarded to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study.

Funds may not be used for family members.
